How to Protect Unoccupied Buildings during the Summer Holidays ..
With summer in full swing many hashtag#charities and hashtag#community groups pause their regular activities while schools break up. With buildings temporarily closed or left unoccupied, the risk of damage, theft or vandalism increases.
Here are some practical steps to protect your premises during the school break.
➡️ Secure the building. Double check before you lock up
Opportunist thieves often look for weak spots. Fire exit doors in particular can be vulnerable.
➡️ Set the intruder alarm
A maintained alarm system is one of the most effective deterrents.
Some insurance providers offer discounts for approved systems.
➡️ Turn off utilities (safely)
➡️ Store valuables securely and out of sight
➡️ Liaise with your local community
Inform your local police force or neighbourhood watch that the building will be unoccupied. They may be able to advise on local risks or include your premises in routine patrols.
😁 Check your insurance policy and remain compliant
Unoccupied buildings often carry specific insurance conditions. Make sure you maintain a written log of inspections. This can support any claim in the event of loss or damage.
Now is the time to read your buildings insurance policy in full, paying particular attention to requirements for unoccupied periods
🌞 Stay safe, stay secure this summer
A bit of planning now can protect your charity, community or group building from unnecessary risk during the school holidays.
Enjoy the break if you are off and thank you for all that you do!
