Bringing People Together Through Boccia
Discover how one of the world's most inclusive sports can bring joy, connection, and movement to everyone in your community regardless of age or ability.
What is Boccia?
Boccia is a precision ball sport, similar in spirit to bowls or pétanque, that was originally developed for athletes with physical disabilities. Today it has grown far beyond its origins, played and loved by people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds around the world.
The aim is simple: players or teams take turns to throw, kick, or roll soft leather balls as close as possible to a small white target ball called the jack. The team whose balls finish closest to the jack wins the end. Simple to learn, surprisingly strategic, and endlessly enjoyable.
"Boccia is one of those rare sports where a six-year-old and a sixty-year-old can compete on truly equal terms and both walk away smiling."
Why Boccia is Perfect for Your Group
Whether you run a church, manage a school sports programme, or coordinate a community centre, Boccia is one of the easiest and most rewarding activities you can introduce:
• Truly inclusive: No prior fitness or sport experience needed. Playable from a wheelchair or standing, everyone competes on equal terms.
• All ages welcome: Children, adults, and older members can all play together. It is one of the few sports where age and ability are genuinely no barrier.
• Indoors or outdoors: Played on any flat surface a church hall, school gym, or community courtyard works perfectly.
• Great for wellbeing: Encourages gentle movement, social interaction, and mental focus. Ideal for both physical and mental health.
• No specialist coaching needed: Sessions are easy to set up and run, even without prior sport experience.
How It Works for Your Organisation
• Churches & faith groups: Boccia is a wonderful way to strengthen fellowship and welcome those who may feel excluded from more physical activities. Run a session after a service or as part of a community outreach programme.
• Schools: An ideal addition to PE lessons and lunch clubs, helping meet inclusive sport curriculum goals. Students with physical or learning differences can participate fully alongside their peers.
• Community & youth groups: Whether it is a youth club, day centre, or social group, Boccia needs minimal space and delivers maximum engagement. One set of equipment can serve dozens of participants.
• Care & support organisations: Boccia is widely used in rehabilitation and social care settings. It promotes gentle movement, concentration, and meaningful interaction in a low-pressure environment.
