Tools With A Mission (TWAM) is a Christian charity that collects donated tools from across the UK - everything from carpentry kits to tailoring equipment - and gives them a new purpose. After careful refurbishment in their centres in Ipswich, Rugby, and across the UK, these tools are transformed into complete toolkits and sent to training organisations in the UK and across Africa. There, groups and individuals use them to build sustainable livelihoods.
TWAM’s mission is simple: to empower people through practical aid, in the spirit of Peter 1 4:10: “as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace.“ A toolkit in the hands of a trained craftsperson means independence, income, and a way to support a family. Whether it's a mechanic setting up a workshop or a tailor starting their own business, TWAM tools open doors to opportunity.
Last year, over 18,000 tools were received by centres in Africa, with over 2000 different causes benefiting across five countries. Many of the groups that received tools have experienced great hardship. A mother who is trained in tailoring is able to earn enough money to send her children to school and break the cycle of poverty.
